実は、2010年5月、ドコモがアップルに対して激しく反発する”事件”があった。それまで主流だったノート型パソコンに代わって、タブレット端末の全盛時代の扉を開いたアップルのiPadの発売開始が、その事件である。

　同年1月、アップルは、iPadの発売を発表、その際にiPadのSIMロックを解除し、どこの携帯電話会社の回線でもiPadを接続できるようにするとしていた。ところが、5月の発売時には、一方的に方針を覆し、日本市場向けのiPadをソフトバンクモバイル仕様に一本化してしまった。

　NTTドコモはこの4ヵ月の間に、山田隆持社長がトップ自らiPadにネットワークを開放する意向を繰り返し表明していたため、赤っ恥をかかされる格好となったのだ。

　このため、当時のドコモは、表舞台で、自社ユーザーのために、イー･アクセスなどに遅れをとりながらも、Wifiを介して同社ネットワークにiPadを接続できるサービスを急きょ整える一方、水面下では、なりふり構わず、マイクロソフト、グーグル、サムソンなどに対してコストに糸目を付けずに「ドコモ版のiPad」とでも言うべき専用タブレット端末の開発を強く要請、早期のタブレット端末の投入に並々ならぬ意欲を見せていた。

　さらに言えば、打診を受けた各社が、ドコモのアップルに対する怒りの大きさに驚きを隠さなかったのだ。
